Understanding acne1
Acne affects roughly 9.4% of people worldwide and is the most common skin condition in the U.S. Though it’s not dangerous, acne can be quite painful when severe and may leave scars. Beyond the physical effects, it can take a toll on mental health, impacting confidence and potentially contributing to anxiety or depression.
The good news? There are plenty of treatments out there to help clear up pimples and reduce scarring.
Types of acne2
- Whiteheads
- Blackheads
- Papules
- Pustules or pimples
- Nodules
- Severe nodular acne (cystic acne)
Acne symptoms¹
Acne can show up almost anywhere on the body, but it commonly affects the face, neck, back, shoulders, and chest. While it often creates a rough, uneven texture, acne can also result in:
- Discoloration: Dark patches or spots (hyperpigmentation) and redness.
- Inflammation: Swelling and tenderness.
- Pain: Sensitivity to touch.
The healing process for a single pimple can vary from a few days to several weeks. However, acne breakouts can take significantly longer to resolve, especially without appropriate treatment.
Acne causes²
Acne can stem from several key factors: excess oil production from overactive sebaceous glands, the buildup of dead skin cells that clog pores, and bacterial growth in these clogged pores, which can lead to inflammation.
The following factors can also increase your risk of developing acne:
- Hormones: Androgens, both male and female sex hormones, stimulate oil production. Hormonal fluctuations during puberty and pregnancy can trigger acne.
- Genetics: A family history of acne may increase your susceptibility.
- Medications: Certain medications, including those containing hormones, corticosteroids, or lithium, can contribute to acne.
- Age: While acne can affect people of all ages, it is most common in teenagers.
Acne can also worsen because of the following:
- Diet: Some studies suggest a link between certain foods and acne severity.
- Stress: Emotional stress can trigger or worsen acne.
- Physical factors: Pressure from helmets, tight clothing, or backpacks can irritate acne-prone skin.
- Environmental irritants: Pollution and high humidity may contribute to acne.
- Skin manipulation: Squeezing, picking, or scrubbing the skin can worsen acne and lead to scarring.
Acne treatments²
- Mild acne: To tackle those pesky pimples as they appear, consider over-the-counter (OTC) medicated creams, cleansers, and spot treatments.
Look for products containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide dries out existing pimples, prevents new ones, and kills acne-causing bacteria. Salicylic acid exfoliates your skin, preventing pores from clogging. - Moderate acne: If OTC treatments aren’t cutting it after a few weeks, consult a dermatologist. They can prescribe stronger medications to reduce symptoms and prevent scarring.
Consider prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics like erythromycin or clindamycin, or retinoids such as retinol. In some cases, oral antibiotics or hormonal birth control might be recommended. Remember, antibiotics are typically used for short periods to avoid resistance. - Severe acne: For severe acne, your dermatologist may combine several treatments, including oral antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics, and topical retinoids. Hormonal birth control or oral isotretinoin (Accutane) might also be considered.
When to seek medical attention³
If over-the-counter treatments aren’t helping your acne or if your acne is severe, consult a dermatologist. They can evaluate your condition, assess scarring risk, and prescribe tailored treatments.

About Cheryl Lee Eberting, M.D.
Inventor of the TrueLipids® and TrueCider™ Technology. Board-Certified Dermatologist, Former NIH Scientist and Expert in Acne
“I have spent my entire career focused on the treatment of difficult skin conditions. While working as a clinical research scientist at the National Institutes of Health, I treated patients from all over the world with very severe skin problems. I found that there were no effective AND non-toxic solutions for my patients–especially for people who have sensitive skin. I set out to create products that are effective AND hypoallergenic AND non-toxic for all ages. After almost FIVE years of trial and error, TrueLipids and TrueCider were born! These products are so effective that they have received United States patents, and won many awards.
Give them a try. I’m sure you will love them like my family and I do.”
With Love,
