Understanding eczema1
Eczema refers to a collection of skin conditions that cause inflammation, leading to symptoms like itching, dryness, rashes, scaly patches, blisters, and sometimes infections. It affects over 31 million people in the U.S.
Eczema may first appear in infancy, childhood, or even adulthood, and it can vary in severity. In young children, it typically shows up as extremely dry, itchy skin, which can become infected due to excessive scratching. In adults, the condition most often emerges in their 20s or later in life, particularly after age 50.
Types of eczema1
- Atopic dermatitis
- Contact dermatitis
- Dyshidrotic eczema
- Nummular eczema
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Stasis dermatitis
Eczema symptoms¹
Eczema is a unique condition that affects each individual differently. Your skin care routine and the appearance of your eczema can vary significantly from others, even within the same family. The type of eczema, its severity, and the affected areas of the body can change over time.
Eczema can manifest in various ways, including:
- Intense itching
- Dry, sensitive skin
- Inflamed, discolored skin
- Rough, leathery, or scaly patches
- Oozing or crusting
- Areas of swelling
While some individuals may experience all of these symptoms, others may only have a few. Eczema can flare up or subside entirely.
Eczema causes1
There isn’t a single cause for eczema. In fact, each of the seven types has multiple possible causes. Some common contributors include a family history of eczema, exposure to environmental triggers, and stress
- Overactive immune system: Atopic dermatitis, the most common type of eczema, is triggered by an overactive immune system. This response weakens the skin’s protective barrier, leading to dryness, itchiness, and inflammation.
- Genetics and environment: Eczema often arises from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. People with a family history of eczema, especially atopic dermatitis, are more likely to develop it. Additionally, exposure to certain irritants and allergens can trigger flare-ups. Common environmental triggers include:
- Dry air and extreme temperatures: Prolonged exposure can irritate sensitive skin.
- Household products: Soaps, detergents, cleaners, and fragrances can be irritating.
- Fabrics: Wool, polyester, and other rough materials can cause friction.
- Food: Certain foods, especially those containing allergens, can trigger eczema in some individuals.
- Stress: Emotional stress can exacerbate eczema symptoms.
Living with eczema can be challenging. Eczema can be difficult to manage. Knowing what causes it and taking preventative measures can greatly improve your quality of life.
Eczema treatments3
Eczema can be both frustrating and uncomfortable. Understanding the condition and finding effective management strategies is key to relieving symptoms and improving skin health.
- Moisturizing: Regular bathing with a gentle cleanser and consistent moisturizing are essential for managing eczema. Well-hydrated skin helps prevent dryness, irritation, and allergens from worsening symptoms. Many healthcare providers recommend the “Soak and Seal” method for locking in moisture after bathing.
- Wet wrap therapy: For intense flare-ups, wet wrap therapy can provide relief by soothing itching, hydrating the skin, and improving the effectiveness of topical treatments. This method is usually done in the evening after bathing, moisturizing, and applying medication.
- Over-the-counter options: Your healthcare provider may suggest over-the-counter products such as gentle cleansers, mild corticosteroids, moisturizers, petroleum jelly, mineral oil, or tar-based products. The National Eczema Association also offers a directory of approved products.
- Prescription treatments: rIn some cases, prescription medications may be needed to control eczema symptoms. Speak with your doctor to explore these options.

About Cheryl Lee Eberting, M.D.
Inventor of the TrueLipids® and TrueCider™ Technology. Board-Certified Dermatologist, Former NIH Scientist and Expert in Acne
“I have spent my entire career focused on the treatment of difficult skin conditions. While working as a clinical research scientist at the National Institutes of Health, I treated patients from all over the world with very severe skin problems. I found that there were no effective AND non-toxic solutions for my patients–especially for people who have sensitive skin. I set out to create products that are effective AND hypoallergenic AND non-toxic for all ages. After almost FIVE years of trial and error, TrueLipids and TrueCider were born! These products are so effective that they have received United States patents, and won many awards.
Give them a try. I’m sure you will love them like my family and I do.”
With Love,
