Understanding rosacea¹
Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that affects over 16 million Americans. The exact cause is still unknown, and there isn’t a cure yet. However, doctors have found ways to manage it, especially during flare-ups when red, pus-filled bumps often appear on the nose, cheeks, and forehead.
There are four types of rosacea, each with its own symptoms. It’s possible to have more than one type at the same time. The condition tends to come and go, with symptoms lasting for weeks or months, then disappearing before returning.
Most common in people aged 30 to 60, rosacea affects the central part of the face and causes ongoing redness. Even though it can come back repeatedly, symptoms can be managed through lifestyle changes, skin care, medications, and treatments.
Rosacea symptoms2
Rosacea is a common skin condition that often begins with mild facial redness and can develop into more noticeable symptoms over time. Being aware of these signs can help in managing the condition.
- Facial redness and flushing: Rosacea may cause your skin to flush easily. Over time, this redness can become more permanent. Depending on skin tone, it may appear as subtle pink, purple, or a deep flush.
- Visible veins: Small blood vessels, particularly on the nose and cheeks, can become enlarged and visible. These spider veins may vary in visibility based on skin color.
- Swollen bumps: Many people with rosacea develop pimple-like bumps that sometimes contain pus. These bumps often appear on the face but can also affect the chest and back.
- Burning sensation: The affected areas of the skin may feel hot, sensitive, or tender, causing discomfort during flare-ups.
- Eye problems (ocular rosacea): Dry, swollen, or irritated eyes and eyelids can occur, either before or along with skin symptoms.
- Enlarged nose (rhinophyma): In more severe cases, rosacea may cause thickening of the skin on the nose, leading to an enlarged appearance. This is more common in men.
By understanding these symptoms, you can better manage rosacea and seek appropriate treatment when needed.
Rosacea causes3
Rosacea is a skin condition with no single known cause. Experts believe that both genetic and environmental factors may contribute to its development. However, certain triggers have been identified that can worsen symptoms. Being mindful of these triggers can help in managing rosacea more effectively.
- Dietary triggers: Spicy foods are known to aggravate rosacea symptoms. Additionally, foods containing cinnamaldehyde, such as cinnamon, chocolate, tomatoes, and citrus, can also be problematic for some individuals.
- Hot beverages: Drinking hot coffee or tea may trigger flare-ups by increasing skin flushing and redness.
- Bacteria and skin mites: The intestinal bacteria Helicobacter pylori has been linked to worsening rosacea. Similarly, a skin mite called Demodex and the bacteria it carries, Bacillus oleronius, may also play a role in symptom flare-ups.
- Skin proteins: The presence of cathelicidin, a protein that normally protects the skin from infection, may cause inflammation in people with rosacea.
Rosacea treatments4
Although there is no cure for rosacea, there are effective treatments that can help improve both the appearance and comfort of your skin. Since rosacea symptoms vary from person to person, treatment is often customized to suit each individual’s needs.
A combination of self-care and medications is commonly used, with gradual improvement typically seen after a few months. While treatment is usually long-term, there may be periods where symptoms improve enough to temporarily stop medication.
Your treatment plan may involve:
Topical treatments are often the first line of defense, especially for mild symptoms. These include creams, gels, and ointments that contain antibiotics, antiparasitics, or vasoconstrictors to reduce redness and flushing.
Lubricating eye drops or ointments may be used for eye irritation. In more severe cases, eye medications containing antibiotics or immunosuppressants can help manage inflammation.
Antibiotics are typically prescribed for moderate to severe skin rashes or significant eye symptoms. Their anti-inflammatory properties help calm both skin and eye issues.?
Retinoids, which are related to vitamin A, may be effective for severe cases of rosacea.
In some cases, medications used for other conditions may also help reduce flushing and redness.

About Cheryl Lee Eberting, M.D.
Inventor of the TrueLipids® and TrueCider™ Technology. Board-Certified Dermatologist, Former NIH Scientist and Expert in Acne
“I have spent my entire career focused on the treatment of difficult skin conditions. While working as a clinical research scientist at the National Institutes of Health, I treated patients from all over the world with very severe skin problems. I found that there were no effective AND non-toxic solutions for my patients–especially for people who have sensitive skin. I set out to create products that are effective AND hypoallergenic AND non-toxic for all ages. After almost FIVE years of trial and error, TrueLipids and TrueCider were born! These products are so effective that they have received United States patents, and won many awards.
Give them a try. I’m sure you will love them like my family and I do.”
With Love,
