Understanding skin aging1
As we age, our skin faces numerous challenges—from sun exposure and harsh weather to poor habits. However, taking proactive steps can help keep your skin looking fresh and supple.
The way your skin ages is influenced by several factors: lifestyle choices, diet, genetics, and personal habits. For example, smoking introduces free radicals into your system—unstable molecules that cause cell damage and lead to premature wrinkles.
Additional contributors to skin aging include natural aging processes, sun exposure (photoaging), pollution, and the loss of subcutaneous fat. Other elements like stress, gravity, daily facial movements, obesity, and sleep positions also play a role in the aging of your skin.
Skin aging symptoms2
Our skin often reveals the first signs of time. These changes are typically characterized by:
- Age spots: An increase in pigment cells can lead to the formation of dark spots, often referred to as age or liver spots. These spots are more likely to appear on sun-exposed areas like the backs of the hands.
- Thinning: The epidermis, the outer layer of skin, becomes thinner due to a decrease in cell production. This, combined with the thinning of the dermis, contributes to a crepey or wrinkled appearance.
- Wrinkles: Sensitivity to touch.
- Thinning: The epidermis, the outer layer of skin, becomes thinner due to a decrease in cell production. This, combined with the thinning of the dermis, contributes to a crepey or wrinkled appearance.
- Dryness: A decrease in sweat and oil glands can make the skin more prone to dryness, roughness, and itching.
- Sagging: Reduced production of elastin and collagen, the proteins responsible for skin elasticity, leads to sagging and drooping. Gravity plays a significant role in this process, especially in areas like the jawline and under the eyes.
- Broken blood vessels: The thinner, more delicate skin of older individuals may experience broken blood vessels, which can appear as bruises or permanent redness.
Skin aging causes¹
Although aging is a natural process, certain factors can accelerate skin aging. External influences can cause the skin to show signs of aging sooner than it naturally would.
- Sunlight exposure: UV rays cause about 90% of visible skin aging, known as photoaging, and increase the risk of skin cancer. HEV light (like blue light) and infrared light affect collagen and elasticity but don’t raise skin cancer risk.
- Smoking: Toxins from nicotine in cigarettes damage collagen and elastin, resulting in sagging skin, wrinkles, and a hollow appearance.
- Diet: Diets rich in sugar and refined carbs may speed up aging, while diets high in fruits and vegetables can help counteract these effects.
- Alcohol: Chronic alcohol consumption dehydrates and damages the skin, leading to premature aging.
- Sleep quality: Poor or insufficient sleep accelerates cellular aging, impacting your skin’s appearance.
- Stress: High cortisol levels due to stress hinder the production of hyaluronan synthase and collagen, which are essential for youthful skin.
Skin aging causes²
Age defense treatments offer a variety of options to address wrinkles, age spots, and other skin aging symptoms.
- Topical products containing niacinamide can help reduce pigmentation and fine lines.
- Injections of fillers, such as body fat or synthetic collagen, can be used to plump wrinkles.
- Chemical peels exfoliate the skin, removing the top layer and promoting new cell growth.
- Botox injections relax facial muscles, preventing wrinkles in areas like the forehead and around the eyes.
- Vascular lasers can target broken blood vessels and improve the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, and scars.

About Cheryl Lee Eberting, M.D.
Inventor of the TrueLipids® and TrueCider™ Technology. Board-Certified Dermatologist, Former NIH Scientist and Expert in Acne
“I have spent my entire career focused on the treatment of difficult skin conditions. While working as a clinical research scientist at the National Institutes of Health, I treated patients from all over the world with very severe skin problems. I found that there were no effective AND non-toxic solutions for my patients–especially for people who have sensitive skin. I set out to create products that are effective AND hypoallergenic AND non-toxic for all ages. After almost FIVE years of trial and error, TrueLipids and TrueCider were born! These products are so effective that they have received United States patents, and won many awards.
Give them a try. I’m sure you will love them like my family and I do.”
With Love,
