What is melasma?

Melasma is a condition that causes brown or gray-brown patches on the face, most often on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. It’s caused by an overproduction of melanin (skin pigment) triggered by factors like sun exposure, hormones, and certain medications.

What causes melasma?

Melasma is triggered by:
Sun exposure (UV and visible light)
Hormonal changes (pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone therapy)
Genetics (family history increases risk)
Certain skincare products that irritate skin
Heat and inflammation in the skin

How do hormones affect melasma?

Estrogen and progesterone can stimulate the melanocytes (pigment cells) in your skin, leading to increased pigmentation. This is why melasma is common during pregnancy or when using hormonal birth control.

Can pregnancy cause melasma?

Yes. This is called chloasma or the “mask of pregnancy.” Hormonal changes during pregnancy can trigger melasma, and it often fades after delivery but may persist for many years.

Can birth control pills cause melasma?

Yes. Birth control pills containing estrogen and/or progesterone can trigger or worsen melasma. Switching to a non-hormonal contraceptive may help some people.

What does melasma look like?

Melasma presents as brown, tan, or gray-brown patches on sun-exposed areas of the face. The edges are usually well-defined but can blend into surrounding skin.

How is melasma diagnosed?

Melasma is diagnosed by examining your skin and by ruling out other things that can cause unwanted pigmentation. Sometimes a Wood’s lamp or dermoscopy is used to determine how deep the pigment is. Deeper pigmentation is more difficult to treat so it is helpful to know the depth of pigmentation when choosing the best treatment plan for you.

Is melasma permanent?

Melasma can fade with proper treatment and sun protection, but it can also return if triggers such as sun exposure and hormones are not controlled.

How can I treat melasma at home?

OTC options include:
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+)
Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and iron oxide (to filter visible light that contributes to melasma)
Topical brighteners (niacinamide, resveratrol, azelaic acid, licorice root extract)
Gentle exfoliation with polyhdyroxy acids (PHAs) including gluconolactone and lactobionic acid

What prescription treatments work for melasma?

Common dermatologist-prescribed options:

Does sunscreen really help melasma?

Can diet affect melasma?

Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation, but not all hyperpigmentation is melasma. Melasma has a hormonal and sun-triggered component and is more likely to recur. Hyperpigmentation can happen after inflammation in your skin or when you are taking certain medications.

Do men get melasma?

Yes. Although women get melsma more commonly than man, 10–25% of melasma cases occur in men. It often linked to sun exposure and genetics.

Will melasma fade after stopping birth control?

It may improve after stopping hormonal contraception, but pigment can take months to fade and sometimes requires treatment.

Is laser treatment safe for melasma?

Lasers can help in some cases but also risk making melasma worse if not done correctly. They should be performed by an experienced dermatologist.

Can chemical peels help melasma?

Yes, especially gentle peels with lactic acid. Aggressive peels can trigger more pigment, so caution is key. If something causes inflammation and redness, then it can end up with more pigmentation.

What is the fastest way to get rid of melasma?

There’s no instant cure. The fastest improvement comes from a combination of strict sun protection, topical brighteners, prescription creams, dietary and lifestyle optimization, and sometimes, in-office treatments such as chemical peels, microneedling or laser therapy.

How can I prevent melasma from coming back?

Wear sunscreen daily (SPF 50+)
Use a sunscreen that screens visible (iron oxides) and UV wavelengths (zinc)
Reapply every 2 hours outdoors
Wear hats and sunglasses
Avoid peak sun hours (between 10AM and 2PM) and direct sun exposure to your face
Limit heat exposure to your face
Manage hormone triggers if possible
